This weekend was TOO good. No, it wasn't TOO good, how can something be too good, really? Well ok, Friday night started everything off with a screening of Say My Name, a documentary about real women in hip hop (Holler St. Andrew's Hall). That was really fascinating, and funny, and positive. Top notch. Immediately following that (I should mention that everything this weekend was immediately followed by something else. Non stop. Literally.) we went to Goldie Mills park, a little secluded spot by the river, where I'd never been. We made paper boats that we sailed down the river while we shared a mickey of spiced rum. My boat kept tipping over, and sinking, but eventually it made it down the Speed. It got dark quickly, and the moon was hidden from us by the forest, so we headed back up the path and swung at the park set while I finished my spiked 1L of Coca Cola. Around 11 we headed to the Googenheim for a night of DJs and dancing. Well I was feeling pretty mellow and low key, so I kicked it in the corner and watched the bros (only a few girls) let out their inner electrodisco personalities. Nat Lou D was being hounded all night by people wanting her attention. No shocker there. You WISH. We split pretty early for a Friday night, went home, smoked a bunch, and passed out.
Saturday. Woke up, went to the Farmer's Market, had some delicious fresh squeezed juice, bought some buttermilk bread, couldn't find peas. Where were the peas! Left there for Len's Mill, we needed fabric for the Derby game, to make our own pseudo uniforms/hooligan gear. Then to Bible's for Missions. I found some bitchin' shoes, that I might go back and buy some time in the near future. Ok, so then back home. Lunch/t-shirt making (Love you leopard print). Then, oh my gosh, 500 Days of Summer at the Princess Twin in Waterloo! I'd never been to that theatre, so that was mega fun. We got lost on the way, so we were a little late, but we saw most of the movie and it was phenomenal. Brilliant. Then, then, then, off to Toronto. In Toronto, first we went to a pre-opening viewing of Julia Busato's new exhibit at Come as You Are (a great land) on Queen St. W. It was really different than any of her other work I'd seen, so that was brill. Next, Island Foods!! Want delicious, fresh, perfect, FILLING West Indian cuisine? Go here. Really. No, really. It's AMAZING! (I still have half a boneless chicken roti and one doubles waiting in the fridge!) Alright, then right to ROLLER.DERBY! Death Track Dolls vs. Gore Gore Roller Girls. Nat Lou D and I were on the side of the Gores. Sporting our leopard, with clapper noise makers and tambourines, sitting right next to the penalty box. Classic. The Gores won, obviously. By nearly 100 points. There was also a half time show, these two something teen girls did lyrical/interpretive dance/striptease/gymnastics. Wow. So you'd think by this point the day would be over. BUT YOU'D BE WRONG! Those who knows me know that I love, more than many things, love love love bowling! Guess what was next! Bowling back in Guelph with some mates. I won. Har har.
Sunday. Started everything with breakfast at Frieda's in Cambridge. Delicious! Cute place, too. Cafe style, like with trays and things. Then to Nat Lou D's parents' place, to decide whether to get the canoe or play Wii. The weather was being uncooperative and kept changing. It was looking like rain and clouds and storms. But somewhere during my tour of the house, sun! So we took the canoe. Then to Guelph Lake, where we paddled to a remote private island for the afternoon. I went swimming, for the first time in years. I actually don't remember the last time I had been swimming. Apparently in those dry years, I forgot that cell phones aren't fond of water, because mine was in the pocket of my swimming trunks, and I left it in there while standing waist deep in the lake. Now I need a new phone, so, there's a push for something new, innit? When we left the lake we returned the canoe, then went home for a BBQ! Some people were coming over to join us, and just as we started barbecuing, the sky began to turn very dark, and strangely coloured. Red in parts, grey in parts, dark blue in parts. Just as the burgers and tofu skewers were finished, the skies opened and poured down. We decided to eat outside on the covered porch. Lightning and thunder, torrential downpour, tornado warnings, perfect outdoor dining weather! It was actually really fantastic to watch the south and north storms battle, but eventually we took it inside for dessert. Some post dinner conversation closed the weekend. Absolutely lovely.
I should also say that this was ALL a series of surprises for me, all planned by Nat Lou D, my bestest. What a brilliant weekend, I haven't had one so good in....I can't even recall one so good! Also, everywhere we went we found parking directly in front of our destination! Like a movie!
THANK.YOU!
